Dia 18 de Julho de 1918 marca o nascimento de Nelson Mandela, líder sul-africano e ativista dos direitos humanos.

Hoje, celebra-se o seu centenário, tornado Dia Internacional Nelson Mandela pela Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas (AGNU), em 2009. Especialmente dedicado à luta contra a pobreza, este ano contará com inúmeros eventos, com o objetivo de difundir os seus valores, que incluem a proteção de direitos humanos, a igualdade racial e de género, a reconciliação e a resolução de conflitos, e a promoção de uma cultura de paz mundial.

A nível internacional, para além de uma reunião na AGNU no próprio dia 18, irá ser organizada ainda a Cimeira da Paz Nelson Mandela, no dia 24 de Setembro, no mesmo local, com o objectivo, entre outros, de declarar a década 2019-2028 como a Década Internacional Nelson Mandela, de forma a lutar por um mundo mais justo, mais igual e mais pacífico. A nível nacional, um ciclo de conferências e seminários está a decorrer, contando com a presença de inúmeras personalidades internacionais e nacionais, com o objetivo de reflectir sobre a construção de pontes para a paz e reconciliação nacionais e globais (mais informações aqui http://centenariomandela.pt/). Também a Union Internationale des Advocats (UIA) irá atribuir a Medalha da UIA, a título póstumo, a Nelson Mandela, que contará com a presença do Bastonário Dr. Guilherme Figueiredo, no dia 18 às 11h no Salão Nobre do Ministério da Justiça.
